Common Core State Standards at C-Prep

The Connecticut State Board of Education (SBE) adopted new national academic standards known as the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English language arts and mathematics that establishes what Connecticut’s public school students should know and be able to do as they progress through grades K-12.

The Common Core State Standards are important because they will help all children to learn the same skills. They create clear expectations for what your child should know and be able to do in key areas:  reading, writing, speaking and listening, language and mathematics. If you know what these expectations are, then you can work with the teacher and help your child prepare.

You play a major part in your child’s academic preparation. The following site has information about Common Core and student success from Kindergarten to High School: http://www.hartfordschools.org/index.php/common-core-at-hps.

Lyman Pies & Cookie Dough: Pick Up 11/20, 2 PM - 7 PM

THANK YOU

To all our families that ordered pies and cookie dough during the Lyman Pie Fundraiser. We made a little over $3,000 in net sales. A full report will be posted soon and made available at the next PTO General Meeting.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: All pies and cookie dough orders must be picked up between 2 PM and 7 PM on Wednesday November 20, 2013. District cafeteria rules forbid us from using the schools refrigerators to house the pies.

We sincerely apologize to those families who made orders but whose forms did not make it to the PTO within the order period of the fundraiser. We made diligent efforts to negotiate to fulfill them; but the administrator of the fundraiser cannot extend the deadline for orders.

CIAC Cross Country: Capital Prep Brings Home Class S Boys Title

The Capital Preparatory Magnet School Boys Cross Country team earned their 'moment in time' yesterday at the Class S meet by scoring a low 43 points and winning the Class S Championship.  Bolton, the second place team, scored 74 points.

This was the first time a Hartford Public School has won a Class title (the CIAC started to compete Class meets in 1958), and the first City team since 1950 to bring home a championship trophy.

C-Prep Book Fair - COME - Thru Thursday - Sheff Center - 3:30 - 7:15 PM

Good Books by Edgar Guest

Good books are friendly things to own.
If you are busy they will wait.
They will not call you on the phone
Or wake you if the hour is late.
They stand together row by row,
Upon the low shelf or the high.
But if you’re lonesome this you know:
You have a friend or two nearby.

Trunk or Treat - CANCELED!

Please note that because of the threat of inclement weather and low interest, the PTO Board voted today to cancel the Trunk or Treat event originally scheduled for 10/31/2013.

Box Tops Collection Begins!

Dear Capital Prep Families,

My name is Tiffany Nichols and I’m the Box Tops for Education® Coordinator at CPMS. I wanted to send out a letter to introduce myself and let you know about the Box Tops program at our school.

Box Tops for Education is a national school earnings program that has been around since 1996. Since then, schools across the country have earned over half a billion dollars from Box Tops to buy whatever they need.

Our school’s goal this year is to earn $1000.00 for Capital Prep. Earn cash for your school by clipping 10¢ Box Tops from hundreds of products and having your kids bring them in to their advisor. Start clipping today!

Also, at the end of each quint, the advisory team that brings in the most Box Tops will win a great prize!
