Parent Volunteers Needed: One Time Events

The Spring Lyman Butter Braid Bread Fundraiser will benefit the graduating senior class. Funds raised will be donated for to one or more graduating seniors. But to organize the effort and volunteers, we need a chairperson. The person will lead volunteers to contact with MCM fundraising, organize marketing, distribute order forms, collect order forms, organize orders, and distribute orders. To sign up to be the chairperson or a volunteer, contact the PTO: ptocapitalprep1@gmail.com. The Bread Sale is tentatively scheduled for March 19th - April 2; Pick up day: April 16th. UPDATE: Thanks to Melissa Sanchez for answering the call to be chairperson for the Butter Braid Bread fundraiser! We still need volunteers though - send an e-mail to ptocapitalprep1@gmail.com to help.

A chairperson for the Scholastic Book Fair is needed. The book fair is scheduled for March 31 - April 3 and we like to a chair or two co-chairs to help organize the volunteers, promote the fair, order material, set up and organize the fair, as needed. If you are interested, please contact the PTO: ptocapitalprep1@gmail.com. UPDATE: Thanks to our C-Prep teachers, Ms. Gambino and Ms. Ellingwood for answering the call to be chairpersons for the Scholastic Book Fair fundraiser! The bucks raised from the sale will benefit the Science Program for Capital Prep. We still need volunteers though - send an e-mail to ptocapitalprep1@gmail.com to help.

Change in C-Prep PTO Leadership

We thank our present PTO President, Debra Gordon for her passion, energy and leadership of the Capital Preparatory Magnet School Parent Teacher Organization to date. A personal matter requires that she relinquish her duties immediately. Thanks to our present Vice Presidents of Lower and Upper School for accepting this opportunity to co-preside over the organization for the remainder of the 2013/2014 school year. The PTO Board unanimously voted 'Yes' on the motion to install Felicia Goodwine-Vaughters and Samenthur Neptune Blake as the Co-Presidents of the Capital Prep Magnet School Parent Teacher Organization effective Thursday February 20, 2014.

The election period for the 2014/2015 PTO Board is still scheduled to begin this week. The current Board still plans to engage the new Board members, beginning in March through the end of the school year, to facilitate a warm hand-off.

Coming Soon: C-Prep Lower School Garden Club

Lower School’s Enrichment Program will include a Garden Club in the Spring/Fall 2014. The club will offer an opportunity for students in grades 2-5 to learn to grow and harvest their own food using the school’s outdoor garden beds. We are planning on growing a number of vegetables to harvest in the spring and other vegetables which we will harvest in the fall: Garden Plan. The produce may be used in the cafeteria and packed into the weekend back-pack program for families. We will also grow some flowers that the students will use to beautify the school grounds.

VOLUNTEERS - Parents / Families - NEEDED: Contact Alice Gold

We are looking for parents who would like to volunteer to assist during Enrichment period, which is 2:45-3:45 on Mondays and Thursdays. The spring club runs from the end of April until June break. The fall program, we believe, will run from September through November.

We also are looking for parents who would like to help tend the garden. Since there are no enrichment programs during the summer months, we need people at that time to help weed, make sure the garden is watered and fall crops are planted. We could also use assistance during the spring and fall to back up the children since the club will only meet two days a week.

Some gardening experience would be helpful, but is not necessary.

No CMTs this year; instead: SBAC

In Dr. Kishimoto's December 2014 Message, she revealed that "this spring our students will have the unique opportunity to take the new national assessment, the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC), instead of the CMT or CAPT. All students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 will be participating in the new Smarter Balanced Assessments for Literacy and Mathematics instead of the CMT or CAPT for Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.  ...Please note that students in grades 5 and 8 will still take the Science CMT and students in grade 10 will take the CAPT Science assessment. Students identified through the Planning and Placement process will continue to take the Skills Checklist this spring.  The SBAC Field Test will be administered to all students via computers.  The total testing time is similar to or slightly less than the CMT or CAPT.  While this new test will not be officially administered to all students in Connecticut until the spring of 2015, all public schools in Hartford will be participating in the field test this spring." (Full Message)

Thank You!

Thanks to all the families that donated indoor recess items last December. In addition, thanks to the Lohr family and an anonymous donor who gave monetary donations to the effort. And, thanks to all members of the C-Prep family that support the PTO events; because of your contributions, the PTO was able to grant $200 towards the purchase of recess equipment. There is always more that can be done. If you wish to give additional gifts of cash (money orders payable to Capital Preparatory Magnet School) or play equipment, please drop them off in the office to the attention of Ms. Kissane.
