CIAC Cross Country: Capital Prep Brings Home Class S Boys Title

The Capital Preparatory Magnet School Boys Cross Country team earned their 'moment in time' yesterday at the Class S meet by scoring a low 43 points and winning the Class S Championship.  Bolton, the second place team, scored 74 points.

This was the first time a Hartford Public School has won a Class title (the CIAC started to compete Class meets in 1958), and the first City team since 1950 to bring home a championship trophy.

For the second year in a row, the Trailblazers took the first two individual spots, with State Champion Dhahran Velasquez (16:18) and runner-up Devin Nelson (16:49).  The pair were the only athletes faster than 17:00 for the race.

Kevin Rivera earned All-State honors with Dhahran and Devin, by placing 5th on the day.  Joseph Dobson gave Capital 4 of the top 12 athletes in the race with his 10th place finish.  Finishing the scoring was Phil Cruz in 26th place.  Mohammed Khadeer and Marquise Maxwell were the two other varsity runners competing for Capital Prep.

The next meet will be the State Open on Friday at 2:00pm at Wickham Park.  If the team places in the top 6, Capital will become the smallest school ever to represent Connecticut at the New England Championships.
