Upcoming PTO Events: December 2013

Thanks to the parents who have submitted questions for the panel discussion. Almost all the questions we received must be addressed by our Heads of School or administration, so the teacher's panel is not applicable. The PTO is working to schedule a forum in which the Heads of School can respond to the already submitted questions. It is likely to be done early next year. As such, we're re-formatting the agenda for this Thursday's meeting. It will include time to log more questions, as well as give updates on 2013 PTO events and a forward look at upcoming PTO events. We look forward to seeing you there.

Capital Prep - All School Play Date: Dec 30, 4:00 - 8:00 PM, Launch Trampoline Park in Hartford. The whole family, friends, & neighbors. BRING THE FLYER: Click.

Thank You! The Recess Materials Inventory Got A Boost!

Capital Prep Student: Kyle Smith, Recognized for Exceptional Performance

Kyle Smith, Capital Prep 3rd Grader, will receive an award from John Hopkins University in the Spring of 2014 for performing exceptionally in the 2013 Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Talent Search. His outstanding achievement was demonstrated in Math, Verbal and Spacial Ability. Fewer than 25% of students who test achieve scores at his level. Kyle has been at Capital Prep since 1st Grade. Congratulations to him.

A partnership with Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth program enables Capital Prep students to participate in CTY's online courses in mathematics and language arts. The gifted program is integrated into the classroom through common teaching strategies. Contact Ms. Ayers for information about participating in this program.

This story was submitted by Kyle's parents.

C-Prep Students: World Advocacy

Capital Preparatory Magnet school joined more than 700 of their colleagues from across the state this past weekend as delegates to the annual Model United Nations Plenary Session, sponsored for more than 60 years by the World Affairs Council of Connecticut.

The Model U.N. is a simulated meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in which student teams, each representing member nations, meet and discuss ways to resolve the most pressing issues occurring around the world.Participants research their countries, take on roles as diplomats of those countries, investigate international issues, debate within parliamentary rules and procedures, consult and develop solutions to world problems, and ultimately they vote on those solutions.

Math Night was Awesome

We learned last week that our homes are full of opportunities to explore math with our children and, at the same time, build their self-confidence and understanding of mathematical ideas. The activities teachers presented were enjoyable and inviting and used items that can be found in our homes. Thanks to Ms. Ayers and the staff/faculty of Capital Prep for great evening. For pictures - check out the bottom of the home page of the PTO web site.

Report of Recent PTO Events

Fall Into Reading Book Fair

Another successful book fair! We sold 443 books, for a total of $2,242.97. This is about $700 less than the two previous Fall fairs, but definitely not too shabby.

Fun fact: Over the last 3 years, we have placed approximately 3000 books in the hands of Capital Prep kids, for a grand total of 11,247.48 scholastic bucks!

Lyman Pie Sales

Thanks to our families, teachers and staff: you sold 337 pies and 141 packs of cookie dough. WOW!!!

What went well:

- Pick up was sweet as pie - everything was in order and ready when customers arrived

What did not go so well:

- Some forms did not make it home
- Some forms and dollars did not make it out of the backpacks

Next time, the PTO will:

- Remind advisors to distribute the forms placed in their mailboxes to children
- Share information with parents about how they can get more forms
- Remind advisors and parents to ask their children if order forms were turned in

Overall, we are very thankful to all the families who supported the event. The profit from this year’s event was $2,700 and it will go towards the PTO events targeted for 2013/2014.
