Street Law at Capital Preparatory Magnet School
Over the past two months the students of Capital Preparatory Magnet School were able to gain some valuable insight and experience through a joint effort of collaboration with the University of Connecticut law school.
The administration at Capital Preparatory Magnet School made it possible for a select group of University of Connecticut law students to enter our classrooms not only as prospective lawyers but as teachers.
The Law students enriched the classroom experience of the students by adding depth and dimension to their unit of study on the Bill of Rights and the Judicial System. These university students were added life to the classroom for our students by providing them with the opportunity to analyze and debate past and present landmark arguments taken up by our courts. They illustrated the direct impact the Constitution and the courts have on the lives of people today.
In addition the experience also served as a source of direction for some of our students. They were able to look into their future and realize the possibilities offered by the study of law. Capital Prep students were able to meet and converse with law students who are pursuing their dreams. The law students were able to shed light on many questions, doubts and fears our students might have had in pursing such a dream.
All said, the experience was an opportunity to grow for all the participants. Well stated by Jeannette Lee, a future law student, “I learned more about the educational process through this experience than I anticipated. I learned not only how to become a better student, but also a better presenter of knowledge. I know this experience will help me to become a better lawyer.” Olivia Cretella stated, "Having these University of Connecticut Law students in our class gave me real sense of the future is now.”
