We are disappointed that the Hartford board of education rejected two proposed magnet schools and declined to move forward with a plan to turn over management of SAND Elementary School to Capital Prep Schools, Inc. The Capital Prep PTO sincerely appreciated all the families who came out on Tuesday to support the proposal. We demonstrated that we are a community who is ready to offer the promise of a good education to more children. Thank you.
Capital Prep Families:
Recently, Steve Perry, Principal of Capital Preparatory Magnet School told me about an opportunity to offer more Hartford school children an option for a better education.
The proposal to take the Capital Prep educational model and work with the families at another Hartford School that, over many years, has not been able to raise the performance of their students is being proposed next week. Last week, the PTO provided a view of what it will mean for Capital Prep. More.
I will be clear: Capital Prep is not a perfect school. We have challenges. But, I know that our children learn here and I know that they are being equipped to make a difference in their world. I know that we as parents work with our advisors and teachers and push one another to get better results. And, I see teachers and staff make creative and substantial efforts to improve the performance of every student. It’s our village: our kids are active participants, along with us the parents and guardians and with our teachers and administration.
The Capital Prep curricula, teaching methods, and programs are different from traditional public schools. Our basis is one of social justice. This is an opportunity to put into practice what we teach.
Your PTO Board feels we should not keep this to ourselves. Come with your whole family to the Board Meeting next Tuesday (11/19) at 5:30 PM when the proposal to replicate the Capital Prep school model at another Hartford Public School will be presented. Walk, drive, or board a bus from Capital Prep to Sarah J. Rawson Elementary School, 260 Holcomb Street, Hartford, CT 06112 where the meeting will take place.
There is a child, not our own, who needs us to do a singular act on their behalf.
